Aikidō (合気道, Aikidō) is a Japanese martial art developed by Morihei Ueshiba (1883–1969). Training takes place in the dojo through body movement, footwork, throws, pins and progressive partner exercises.
The training method is key to understanding the art: each technique explores distance, direction, balance and timing. One practitioner initiates an agreed attack while the other studies a technical response, then they exchange roles. Repetition allows correction and deeper understanding.
What you learn in class
Classes include warm-ups, footwork, ways of receiving techniques and partner work. The technical repertoire includes pins and throws, as well as principles such as ma-ai —appropriate distance—, irimi —entering— and tenkan —turning to change direction—.

Your first visit
A newcomer can begin by watching a class and joining exercises suited to their experience. Early lessons explain dojo etiquette, bowing, the instructor’s guidance and safe basic movements.
Wear comfortable clothes, discuss any relevant physical limitation beforehand and follow the instructor’s guidance. Your first goal is to understand the atmosphere, teaching method and practical demands of a class.
Weapons training
Many Aikidō traditions use the bokken (wooden sword) and jō (staff). These tools support the study of distance, trajectories and body movement. Their role differs across schools and instructors.
