Ukemi: learning to receive movement

Ukemi (受身) refers to how a practitioner receives a technique or fall in Aikidō. Mae Ukemi (前受身) is the forward roll. Training aims to distribute movement along a diagonal path while protecting the head, neck and spine.

Training progression

  1. Preparation. Choose an appropriate training surface and practice under an instructor’s supervision. First, become familiar with the correct position of hands and forearms.
  2. Low position. Start close to the ground, with knees and hips bent. The initial aim is to understand the direction of movement rather than build speed.
  3. Head protection. Keep your chin slightly tucked and avoid putting the crown of your head or your neck onto the mat.
  4. Diagonal path. The roll travels from the back of one shoulder towards the opposite hip, creating a continuous diagonal path.
  5. Controlled finish. Return to a stable position without a sudden push. Higher starting positions are introduced only when the low roll is consistent.

What to observe in the video

Gabriel Benítez demonstrates body organization, hand and arm direction, protection of head and neck, and gradual progression from low positions. Watch how the details work together instead of copying only the final result.

Mistakes to avoid

Putting weight directly onto the head, landing on a stiff shoulder or rolling along the spine are reasons to stop and review the movement. Speed never replaces control. Stop when experiencing pain or disorientation and adapt the exercise with your instructor.
